A brilliant salmon-fly designed for power and visibility, the Hutchie's Shrimp is Jim Hutchinson's answer for those edge-of-season currents and flood-washed runs when salmon are pushed and reacting. Built on an Irish double hook, this version offers a more streamlined profile; less bulky, more elegant in estuary mouths, flushes, and slower sections. Particularly successful when water isn’t too high but still carries some disturbance: summer floods or late season flows where fish are wary but still responsive. From the same roots of Jim Hutchinson’s craftsmanship on the Tay, this version retains the attractor materials but with a lighter delivery, ideal for more refined situations.

Fishing Tips

Best used: When flood water is dropping, or during steady summer flows where the flash can catch a glance but the fish have time to inspect. Also potent late season when salmon slow down, linger in deeper lies, or feed more cautiously. Tactics: Dead-drifted under a float, swung gently, or even stripped with pauses. Let the fly fall naturally after each cast to mimic a struggling shrimp in the current. Line/Leader Setup: Lighter tippet (within reason), fine leaders, perhaps a sink tip or lightly weighted line to get presentation right without spooking fish.
