Blue Upright Dry Fly

Catalogue No: 941
The Blue Upright is a distinguished dry fly pattern, meticulously crafted to emulate the Blue-Winged Olive (Baetis) mayflies prevalent in various freshwater habitats. Its design and effectiveness have solidified its status as a staple in traditional British fly fishing. The Blue Upright is an excellent variant of R S Austin's Blue Upright. It is more suitably dressed to be fished as a dry fly for when Iron Blues or dark olives are on the water. Created for Devonshire rivers in the early 1900's it also works well throughout the UK on both rivers and still waters.

Fishing Tips

Presentation: The Blue Upright excels when presented as a dry fly during Blue-Winged Olive hatches. Its realistic appearance and delicate landing can entice even the most discerning trout. Technique: Employ a dead-drift presentation on slow-moving sections of rivers and streams to mimic the natural drift of emerging duns. A fine tippet and careful casting are essential to prevent spooking wary fish. Seasonality: Best used during late spring to early autumn, aligning with the lifecycle of the Blue-Winged Olive mayflies. Origin: The Blue Upright is an excellent variant of R.S. Austin's original pattern, which has been a reliable choice for anglers seeking to match the hatch of Blue-Winged Olive mayflies

Request a fly, size or option

We work closely with our fly tyers and can tie most patterns to order: a different hook size, barbless instead of barbed, a tungsten bead instead of a gold head; just ask.

Sending a request is free and you are not committing to buy. Depending on where we are in our tying cycle it can take a month or two for a pattern to arrive, and we may not be able to tie every request (fair usage applies); but if we can, we will.
